Western Michigan University President John Dunn says he’s glad that the university is looking at a funding increase this year, rather than another large cut. But Dunn has concerns with some of the incentives that Governor Snyder wants to use for university funding.

The governor unveiled his budget proposal Thursday. The spending plan for higher education includes incentives for capping tuition, increasing graduation rates and graduating more students in the sciences. (Mlive story on budget)

Dunn says services to students and education need to be considered when setting a cap on increasing tuition. Dunn says he would also like to see other factors considered. He says those include Western’s program for assisting veterans and its initiative for students who have aged out of foster care. Governor Snyder mentioned that program during his “State of the State” Address last month.
