West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton sat down on Monday with WMUK’s Gordon Evans. They discussed a number of issues. A summary:
Payroll tax cut extension
Upton says new spending in the payroll tax cut extension deal is paid for. He says that includes changes to pensions for federal employees and the “spectrum sale” which includes broadcast frequencies. Upton says that has expanded with the expansion of digital communication. He says the continuation of the payroll tax cut is not paid for, but Upton says now is not the time to increase taxes.
Presidential Race
Upton has endorsed Mitt Romney for President. He says the former Massachusetts Governor will focus on jobs and the economy. Upton says he disagrees with Romney’s criticism of the auto rescue package in 2009. Upton says the choice at the time was “between bankruptcy and liquidation.” He says there were strings attached and the money is being paid back.
Birth control and Catholic organizations
Upton says requiring Catholic hospitals and charities to cover prescriptions or procedures that they are opposed to is a violation of religious liberty. Upton says Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sibelius has been invited to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the issue. Upton is chairman of that committee.
Keystone XL Pipeline
Upton says President Obama is “bound and determined” to push a decision of the Keystone XL Pipeline until after the election. But Upton says a decision is needed now because of the U.S. need for oil and the jobs the pipeline would create. Environmental groups have protested the pipeline saying it will create increased carbon emissions. Upton says Canada will produce the oil whether it comes to the U.S. or goes to another nation (like China)
Palisades Nuclear Power Plant
Upton says he is satisfied that the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is operating safely. The NRC recently downgraded the plant and are requiring more inspection after a series of safety problems at the plant south of South Haven.
